Launching a store is easier when the basics are sorted before you build. Work through this list so your first customers have a smooth experience.
The checklist
- Choose a platform. Shopify is quick to launch and easy to manage. WooCommerce gives more control if you already use WordPress.
- Check your business registration. Payment gateways usually ask for your business registration documents, so have them ready before you apply.
- Set up payments. Choose a gateway that supports the methods your customers use, such as FPX online banking, cards and e-wallets. Compare fees and approval times.
- Plan shipping. Compare couriers, set rates for West and East Malaysia if you ship to both, and decide on packaging and tracking.
- Write good product pages. Use clear photos, accurate descriptions, sizes, prices in RM and stock levels.
- Publish your policies. State delivery times, returns, refunds and how to contact you. Clear policies reduce disputes and build trust.
- Add SEO basics. Give every product and category its own title and description, so your store can appear in search.
- Keep marketplaces consistent. If you also sell on Shopee, Lazada or TikTok Shop, keep names, photos and prices aligned with your own store.
- Test everything on a phone. Place test orders, try each payment method and check that confirmation emails arrive.
- Plan your launch. Prepare social posts, a message to existing customers and, if you have a shop, an updated Google Business Profile.
Common mistakes
- Launching with too few photos or vague product descriptions
- Forgetting shipping costs until the first order arrives
- Not testing the checkout on a phone
